Weeks 3 - 4
Well done! Quitting smoking is the best decision you can make for you and your growing baby. You're on your way to better health and a more enjoyable pregnancy.
-
Week 3 - 4
About 6 days after fertilisation, a cluster of cells burrows itself into the lining of the uterus to form an embryo. The outer cells reach out like routes to link with the mother's blood supply to form the placenta.
-
Week 5
The cells fold up and round to make a hollow tube. This will become the baby's brain and spinal cord. By the end of this week, blood circulation will begin.
-
Week 6 - 7
The brain is developing distinct areas, and eyes and ears are beginning to take shape. The heart begins to beat. Small swellings called 'limb buds' show where the arms and legs are growing.
-
Week 8 - 12
The baby is now called a foetus meaning 'young one'. By now, almost all off the babys organs and structures have formed and will continue to grow until delivery.
