New text support programme available

Smokefree has launched its first text only support programme. The SMS-based support tool will deliver a series of automated text messages direct to smokers’ mobile phones over a period of up to 12 weeks to help them through their quit attempt.

The programme has been developed from previous trials that have shown that text support can improve quit rates – as much as doubling a smoker’s chances of success. The Department of Health has worked with various health professionals, including Dr Cari Free from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, to create an effective programme that really works.

From tips on how to plan their quit attempt to advice on beating cravings, smokers will receive support every step of the way. Smokers will also be able to choose between two levels of support: lite and regular, so they will receive the right amount of messages for them.

The support will be promoted through the new and improved Quit Kit, which features instructions on how to activate the service on a mobile, as well as via the Smokefree website and through mailings to the existing database of registered smokers.

Find out more about the new support and how to sign up for it on the Smokefree website.

  1. Dear Team
Great idea but it needs to be broadned into something that other then then I-Phones can use. Many of my clients are on very low incomes and do not have money to buy expensive I-Phones. Something that can run on standard mobiles would be very helpful.
    Best Wishes

  2. Hi Bob,

The text support tool is available for all mobile phone types, so can be used by anyone with a standard mobile phone.
