Pregnancy support materials

A suite of materials aimed at pregnant smokers, their partners and midwives is available to help local areas encourage pregnant women to stop smoking.

A toolkit is available for midwives which features a Q&A booklet and quick-prompt guide, encouraging midwives to discover and record a mum-to-be’s smoking status, and if necessary advise them that quitting is the best thing they can do to improve their health and the health of their baby. Midwives should also recommend that pregnant smokers use the NHS Stop Smoking Services. You can access midwives’ resources via the links below.

In the local toolkit there is also a poster and a leaflet to promote your local pregnancy support service. These feature positive stories from pregnant smokers and reinforce the approachable and friendly service provided by local NHS Stop Smoking advisers. They can be tailored to include local information – for example a particular pregnancy group – and can be distributed via midwives, other healthcare professionals, Surestart centres and clinics.
