Healthcare professionals

Giving brief advice to smokers is the single most effective preventive intervention a healthcare professional can make. In fact, NHS interventions to help people to stop smoking are one of the most cost effective of any in the English healthcare system.

It can take just 30 seconds to advise a patient that stopping smoking is the best thing they can do for their health - and that treatment and support is available to give them the best chance of success. Smokers are up to four times more likely to succeed with NHS support than using willpower alone.

Research has shown that smokers both want and trust the advice of a health professional.

A referral to the local NHS Stop Smoking Service gives a smoker access to free one to one or group support sessions run by trained stop smoking advisers. They give advice on quitting smoking, including helpful tips on dealing with cravings, stop smoking medication and how to stay motivated.
